"Well... How did I get here?"
-Talking Heads
Jess Lobo, a northern California native, has spent the better part of the last decade and a half in Portland, Oregon. It was here that she was introduced to the notions of social and civic justice. After a long stint in small business management, Jess Lobo began attending Portland Community College in 2009 where she was introduced to Sociological Theory. After 10 years of study, she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences with a Minor in Civic Leadership, Suma Cum Laude, June of 2019 from Portland State University.
What this roundabout journey has taught her is that all elements of civic life begin with relationships. Too often the scale of civic problems debilitates and paralyzes, and the scope of social issues too great to ever overcome. However, our greatest deeds are the seemingly insignificant moments of connection, trust, compassion, and understanding. Defined by an element of caring, hallmarked by a genuine interest in the other. Courageously delving into the passions, assets, and struggles of the fellow human who stands across the aisle, one can develop a community rooted in a sense of belonging and collective purpose.
